The end of one year and the dawn of another!

A friend of mine posted this on her blog, she got it from someone else, who got it from someone else before! It is a great way to reflect and plan all in one step!

1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?

Made Thanksgiving dinner for our new American neighbours - scary especially as it still feels like this is their tradition and they should do it better, they were very appreciative and we had a very nice dinner getting to know them and their little children. Met my cousin Kate for the first time.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Yes, sort of. I resolved to be kinder, maintain my weight and exercise 5 times a week. I worked hard to be kinder and did a decent job with the weight, but the exercise dropped off to 2 or 3 times a week at best. I will resolve to do the same this year and add communicate more frequently with my friends, even when life gets very busy.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Nope.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My aunt Pat and two former colleagues that I was close to, Helene and Gill. May 2013 be a better year in this regard.

5. What countries did you visit?

The US - Hawaii, Florida Keys, Vermont, Washinton DC, Gettysburg.

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?

More ME time.

7. What dates from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

August, our great family vacation to Hawaii where the boys learned to surf. September - when Cameron moved out into boarding and for the first time is not living at home full time. So many hurricanes, tornados and shooting tragedies that have impacted so many.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Getting another teaching job, completing an online course in technology in the classroom, keeping my family all in one piece and steering them onward in a positive direction.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Exercise - not nearly regular enough.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

No, thankfully this was a healthy year, no soccer injuries either!

11. What was the best thing you bought?

My Strive pedometer. It really does encourage me to walk more.

12. Where did most of your money go?

School fees, vacations, important things - well worth the cost.

13. What did you get really excited about?

Facetime with my brother, a long wished for trip to Hawaii, spending vacations with my family, seeing Cameron every Friday when he comes home from school for the weekend. Watching Jordan grow tall, strong and confident.

14. What song(s) will always remind you of 2012?

"Never say Never" by Taylor Swift, 'Some nights' by Fun and of course Gangnam Style!

15. Compared to this time last year, are you:

– happier or sadder? Happier.
– thinner or fatter? the same.
– richer or poorer? Richer in many ways

16. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Painting, I have neglected my art - work is getting in the way!

17. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Driving.

18. How did you spend Christmas?

With Mike, Cam and Jordan and my parents at home, quiet and lovely. Presents, a turkey lunch, a walk to the lake and lots of relaxing, followed by our 3rd annual ski trip to Vermont for New Year.

19. What was your favorite TV program?

Watched so little, love 'Elementary' also watch 'Grimm' and some 'NCIS'. Missed 'The Amazing Race'. Quite enjoy Netflix on occasion, usually watched something on my iPad while on the treadmill.

20. What were your favorite books of the year?

Loved 'A Discovery of Witches' by Deborah Harkness. Read a lot, can't remember the titles! Also listen to lots of books on CD in the car while commuting.

21. What was your favorite music from this year?

I try hard to listen to the music the boys listen to, some is nice, some less so, and mostly I have no idea what it is!

22. What were your favorite films of the year?

The Hunger Games and Safe House. Didn't watch many movies, unless they were on the airplane, as with books (and music) I can't remember the titles, clearly that is not what is important to me!

23. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Had dinner with Mike and the boys, lots of chats to friends, I am 45.

24. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Seeing my brother and his family.

25. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?

Started off casual in favourite jeans and yoga pants, stepped it up when I started teaching in April, had to go shopping for work clothes as my previous work clothes from a couple of years ago were all too large! Trying to wear more artistic unconventional clothes.

26. What kept you sane?

My friends, my family, soccer, books, my dog.

27. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.

Every person has a story, often when you listen to it it will make you feel thankful for all you have, take the time to listen for the story.

Killington 2012/2013

We have returned to Killington, Vermont for our third annual New Years ski / snowboard trip this year. On the day we travelled there was a large snow system moving across the country, which made driving slippery and pretty tense in the mountains! It continues to snow and there has been a total of 35" of snow in the last few days! Great conditions!

Taking a break on the run
We have spent 2 days on the hill, great snowy conditions with lots of powder.

Sometimes too much powder as the piles of snow can cause you to catch an edge! At least it is a soft landing!

The Boys!
Today it is very cold up on the mountain - around minus 20 Celcius! It is also pretty windy so we are taking a day off to play games, do puzzles and catch up on some DVD's. Tomorrow should be better so we will be up on the slopes early!

Taking a break for hot chocolate in the snow.

Time flies

Cameron's 17th birthday is next Thursday.  The past few years have flown by so fast and he has grown into a young man any mom would be proud of.  The past 17 years have been filled with his activities - from a busy toddler who climbed the rockery before his first birthday, the 4 year old who was happiest dressed as batman, to the teenager who plays some form of sport every day.  I have loved every minute of watching him on the soccer and rugby field and skating so gracefully on the hockey arena. He is also a very good runner, coming third in the walkathon yesterday - his best result in the 6 years he has taken part.  One of his coaches many years ago said he played with 'heart' - that captures Cam exactly.
He is a loyal friend to his brother and peers and a wonderful son to us. This is his last year at school and as he is in boarding we don't see as much of him as I would wish - however, he is becoming more independent and is enjoying the leadership opportunities at school. This moment in time is filled with academic work and plans for universities next year.
Happy birthday my boy, may your dreams for the next year come true!
